about IMSE

Twenty years after Alvin Toffler described the deindustrialized society in “The Third Wave” in 1980, the IT revolution was the buzzword of the last year of the 20th century. In 20 years, the smallest computer was the size of a refrigerator, and it has been on a desk, in one’s lap, held under one’s arm, and now in the 21st century, it has become small enough to fit in one’s palm. According to one study, the number of smartphones shipped worldwide in 2021 will exceed 1.35 billion, while the number of PCs will be just over 340 million (according to IDC, USA).

ICT, once a symbol of work efficiency, has rapidly transformed into ICT that supports our daily lives. Nowadays, it is the information technology that supports people and society.

In the Bachelor Course and the Information and Management Systems Engineering Major Course, students study applied informatics to support people, data science to support society, and management systems studies to realize these as products, services, and businesses.

A New Engineering to
Move the World Begins.

In the recent advanced information society, information systems have become an important foundation supporting the economic growth and international competitiveness of each country, and the competitiveness of information and communication technology (ICT) and the ability to invest in information technology are becoming the source of international competitiveness. In view of this situation, the “Department of Management and Information Systems Science” was established as a research organization of Nagaoka University of Technology in 2000. At the same time, the “Department of Management and Information Systems Engineering” was established as an educational organization, and in 2004, the “Department of Management and Information Systems Engineering” was established to promote education and research related to management systems and the information systems that support them. Furthermore, with the reform of the education and research organization of Nagaoka University of Technology, the name of the curriculum was changed to “Information and Management Systems Engineering Course/Department” in April, 2022, which is in line with the actual curriculum and the fields of expertise of the staff faculty members. Furthermore, in April 2022, the university reorganized the undergraduate and graduate master’s programs, establishing each engineering field under the Engineering Program and the Department of Engineering. As one of the fields of engineering, the “Engineering Course and Department (Information and Management Systems Engineering)” and the “Information and Management Systems Engineering Course and Department” have been established. We promote research on the design of effective systems and the development of leading engineers who can play an active role internationally, with the aim of providing solutions to important social issues such as expectations for social safety and security, vitality in globalized economic andpolitical activities, and the critical global environment.

About the IMSE

Information & Management Systems Engineering (IMSE) is a concept that integrates Information Systems (IS), which is centered on the application of information and communication technology, and Industrial Engineering (IE), which is the science of management. In the knowledge-based society of the future, it will be necessary to integrate the knowledge and technologies developed and accumulated in management engineering with information and communication technologies to enable rapid and appropriate management in response to rapid changes in the business environment.
